Malcolm Turnbull and His Internal Party Conflicts



When it comes to politics, friends and foes change places in no time. Malcolm Turnbull, the eminent Australian politician also experienced the same while his tenure in the Parliament. The former federal minister and the opposition leader was thrown out of his own party due to some difference in opinions with his party members. A representative of the Wentworth division in Eastern Sydney suburbs faced the heat when he was experiencing the high period of his political life and career.

Malcolm Turnbull started his career as a backbencher in the Parliament and continued to remain the same for a couple of years. His career took a sudden turn when John Howard’s government reshuffled the cabinet and chose Malcolm Turnbull MP as the Parliamentary Secretary of the ruling PM. Howard also gave him the office of water resources and eventually promoted him as the Minister of Environment and Water Resources portfolio. As a minister he started looking after all drought related issues in Australia.


The high period of the political career of Malcolm Turnbull ended as abruptly as it started when the ruling Australian Liberal Party was defeated in the 2008 federal elections. However, he still held the post of the opposition leader. During this period his decision to support the Government planned Carbon Emission Reduction Scheme project created turmoil within the party members. His decision was criticized due to severe environmental consequences that it was supposed to cause and his party members ousted him from the post and the party in December 2009. This came as a shock to him and he kept away from politics for some time.
